Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy Massage

You may want to have massage during pregnancy to alleviate specific physical discomforts of pregnancy, or more generally to have support your own well-being. Pregnancy massage can provide a space to adjust to the changes of pregnancy, and through restoring the mind-body connection. In addition to oil-based massage my training and approach includes acupressure, which works on an energetic level. A pregnancy massage session may include some work with posture and alignment, and after-care exercises to strengthen the abdominal and pelvic floor, in order to prevent some of the problems that can occur in the later stages of pregnancy from developing, or address problems that are already present. The focus of bodywork will change with the physical changes and the woman’s differing needs over the different trimesters of pregnancy.

Regular massage during pregnancy has been shown to lead to lower levels of anxiety, depressed mood and stress hormones, and fewer obstetric and post-natal complications, including lower prematurity rates. Regular massage during pregnancy can reduce the incidence of leg and back pain and lead tohigher levels of dopamine and serotonin, neurotransmitters associated with well-being and good mental health.1
